FIBA World Cup 2019 in th Ph?

With the Philippines gaining a stellar reputation among officials of FIBA after successfully hosting the Asian championship tournament earlier this month, local basketball officials are studying the possibility of putting up a bid to host the Basketball World Cup in 2019.

Officials of the world basketball body were impressed with the country’s staging of the FIBA Asia Championship from August 1 to 11 at the Mall of Asia Arena, from the venue to the accommodations to the technical aspects of the broadcast.

“They’re using the Philippines as a role model. Legend tayo roon sa mga FIBA officials. Ibang klase raw talaga how the event was hosted, the atmosphere inside the venue and how we were able to put up a world class coverage,” said Reyes.

According to a highly-placed source, officials led by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manuel V. Pangilinan are looking at options to bring back the world basketball championship to Manila.

Gilas Pilipinas qualified for the Basketball World Cup in Spain next year. The next iteration of the event will be held in 2019 to kick off a new cycle that would make the tournament the qualifier for the 2020 Olympic basketball competition.

The 2019 event will also feature a bigger cast, with FIBA expanding the lineup from 24 to 32 teams. The event is expected to feature the star-studded Team USA led by players from the NBA.

The Philippines last hosted the world championship in 1978 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Pangilinan was spearheaded the staging of the FIBA Asia Championship in Manila, serving as chairman of the event’s Local Organizing Committee. The group of companies under his banner were also instrumental in providing sponsorship for the event.

The FIBA Asia tilt was the second major high-profile basketball event put up by Pangilinan and co. in the last three years. In 2011, he hosted the SMART Ultimate All-Star Weekend, a series of exhibition games featuring NBA superstars Kobe Bryant, Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, and James Harden, among several others, against local teams.

Bawi na lang next time and great lesson for each team.

Iran Champion ng FIBA Asia 2013, Haddadi Most Valuable Player

We are on FIBA Basketball history!

Till next time Iran! We'll see you in Spain!

Go for the Gold Gilas!

"No one to blame but me" ani Uichico.

2009

We must play our game. That's all.

Go GILAS PILIPINAS! Win the ticket to Spain!

“After many months of discussion, evaluations and speaking with Greg, we felt it was the perfect time for him to make his comeback and re-enter the NBA with the Miami HEAT,” said HEAT President Pat Riley. “It’s a great challenge for him. We know all about his past injuries, but we feel that there is a huge upside and the possibility of him helping us. FIBA Asia 2013 Quarter Finals matches

Court of Appeals: Fort Bonifacio Part of MAKATI

Published: August 5, 2013
The Court of Appeals (CA) has ruled that the 729-hectare Fort Andres Bonifacio is part of Makati City and owned by the city government.

The 729-hectare property includes the so-called military  barangays comprising of Cembo, South Cembo, East Rembo, West Rembo, Comembo, Pembo and Pitogo as well as the Inner Fort Barangays (Barangay Post Proper Northside and Barangay Post Proper Southside).

In a decision written by Associate Justice Marlene Gonzales-Sison, the CA directed Taguig City “to immediately cease and desist from exercising jurisdiction within the disputed area and return the same to Makati City.”

With the decision, the CA declared as constitutional Presidential Proclamation No. 2475 issued by the late President Ferdinand Marcos on January 7, 1986.

Also declared constitutional by the CA was Proclamation No. 518 which stated that the tracts of land, while in Makati City, are parts of Fort Bonifacito.  It amended Proclamation No. 2475.

In its decision, the CA said that the Pasig City regional trial court (RTC) committed an error in declaring the two proclamations as unconstitutional and invalid as they altered boundaries and transferred the disputed areas from Taguig City to Makati City.

It pointed out that since 1970 the seven military barangays have been indicated as parts of Makati City and that all the residents have been voting as Makati City voters in local and national elections
“Hence, Presidential Proclamation Nos. 2475 and 518 did not alter boundaries instead confirmed that said area is under the jurisdiction of Makati,” the CA ruled.

At the same time, the CA noted the delay on the part of Taguig City to file its complaint.

It said that Proclamation 2475 was enacted  in 1986 while Proclamation 518 was issued 1990, but Taguig only filed the complaint in 1993 when the proposed cityhood of Makati was being debated in Congress.

Citing a Supreme Court decision, the CA said that “considerable delay in asserting one’s right before a court of justice is strongly persuasive of the lack of merit of his claim, since it is human nature for a person to enforce his right when same is threatened or invaded.”

Associate Justices Hakim Abdulwahid and Edwin Sorongon concurred in the decision.
